What are Modems, Routers, and Combos?
To be able to get your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet, you will need a modem and a router which are its two major components. The modem makes communication with your internet service provider possible. A cable modem connects to your cable provider through a coaxial cable. If it is connected to your telephone line, then it is a DSL modem. The ISP’s infrastructure capability is where your model will necessarily depend on. This could be through fiber or satellite.
If you have a router then you are able to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. A wireless router creates a Wi-Fi network that devices can connect to. If there are Ethernet cables, there are also routers which has ports for these. with the modem, a router can connect different devices to the internet. The recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to is the router.
Routers come with firewalls, which are protective barricades against the internet. With the router firewall, it gives protection in hardware format, in addition to the software firewall found in your computer.
ADSL devices combine both router and modem in one piece of equipment.
There are only a few cosmetic differences with modem-router combos but all brands basically work the same way.
You can choose from many different types of modem-router combos with prices varying from less than fifty dollars to those over a hundred.
The DOCSIS 3.0 is the latest format for the standard modem for cable, if your service provider provides internet through cable network. For those with DSL connection, if your speed is great than 15 Mbps, the you would go for a VDSL connection and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.
Routers are easier to choose. Routers use two types of technology. There is a beam forming technology for fast AC which directs a beam at your device as compared to the radius wifi technology. New and old devices work well on this technology. The speed can range from 100 Mbps to 5300 Mbps.
A modem router bought on your own is much better than the low renal you pay for the modem router provided by your service provider. Simply spend a few hundred dollars more and you get a big difference in internet speed.
Instead of getting a separate modem and router, it is better to have one unit that serves both function, a modem-router combo. If you are getting all the features of the best modem and the best router, then you get a good system since different brands can be used together.
